What is the difference between Homogeneous and Heterogeneous mixtures?

Mixtures:

When to or more elements or compounds combine and don’t mix well the result is a mixture. Like when you mix water and sand. You have a mixture of sand and water. Mixing them will not change what they are. Just combine them. Also, mixtures can usually be separated by physical methods such as distillation, evaporation, crystallization, or filtration.

Compounds:

Compounds are things that are made up of two or more atoms. When to substances are combined they create something entirely different. Example: When hydrogen and oxygen combine even though they are completely different things they create water (H2O). A compound is a substance whose atoms are made up of more than one element. Compounds have been mixed together. Some examples of compounds are water, sugar and salt. A compound is two or more elements that have undergone a chemical change.

Figure 2 Heterogeneous Examples Heterogeneous: Mixed. In heterogeneous mixtures you can see the different ingredients. Heterogeneous mixtures are jumbled together. Heterogeneous mixtures can usually be separated in to two or more homogeneous mixtures.


Homogeneous:

Means “the same throughout.” You cannot see the other elements in the mixture. You cannot tell that it is a homogeneous by looking at it. Homogeneous mixtures can be made up of solids liquids or gases. Homogeneous mixtures are called solutions. Two or more homogeneous mixtures added together can usually create a heterogeneous mixture. The particles of homogeneous mixtures are molecule-sized, causing them to look uniform even under a microscope.

Heterogeneous:

Mixed. Heterogeneous mixtures have particles that can be seen under a microscope. You can pick out the elements of the heterogeneous like in a taco. You can separate the ingredients, like the lettuce from the tomatoes. Even though a heterogeneous

ousmixture is mixed it is able to be separated. You can tell if you are looking at a heterogeneous mixture

because you can see the different ingredients. Heterogeneous mixtures are

jumbled irregularly together. Heterogeneous mixtures can usually be separated

in to two or more homogeneous mixtures
