Early life
  • Born April 22, 1909
  • She was born into an intellectual, though traditional, family in Turin Italy
  • Her dad would not allow her or her 2 sisters to pursue higher education and professional careers
  • At the age of 20, she persuaded him to allow her to enter the University of Turin to study medicine.
  • The branch of embryology dealing with the origin and development of the nervous system
  • She graduated summa cum laude from the University of Turin Medical School in 1936
  • Then she completed a degree for specialization in neurology and psychiatry in 1940.
  • While in school she had two partners, Viktor Hamburger and Stanly Cohen
  • Rita set up laboratory equipment in her bedroom to continue her research on neurogenesis studying the growth of nerve fibers in chicken embryos
  • Rita and cohen were arwarded the noble prize, but controvercy picked up in the wake of the award.
  • Some people were upset at Rita because she failed to acknowledge her debt to others, such as Rita and Hamburger
  • Two of Rita’s university colleges and friend, Salvador Luria and Renato Dulbecco, also were to receive The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine
Late life
  • In 1999, the Food and Agriculture organization of the United Nations named Rita one of its first four FAO Ambassadors
Fun Facts
  • First and only Nobel Prize recipient to live past the age of 100.
  • There seems to be a chocolate shop around every corner in Rita’s hometown of Turin, Italy
